What A Tree Taught Me.
In the past, I was struggling in my life because my self-love was practically nonexistent, my self-worth was minimal, and my confidence was null and void.
Then I learned five major life lessons from a tree.
Here’s how it happened:
I was at the lowest point in my life, and experiencing what I call “belly to the earth.” It was a time when I did not have hope, and I felt so “low,” literally and figuratively, that I felt the heaviness so deeply that I could not lift myself up. It was as if I was lying with my belly to the earth—unable to help myself, I felt disconnected from myself and Source.
I knew that in order to keep myself from spiraling into a deeper state of despair and depression, I would need brief forays into nature. I didn’t get very far, though, since my feelings of despair sunk any motivation to make anything better in my life.
I would sit at the kitchen table and look out the window, where I could see a tree. It wasn’t much – a lone tree, not many leaves, mostly branches and a spindly trunk. But it was there for me.
I remember thinking if I was a tree, that is how I would look right now. I wasn’t giving myself enough nurturing, sunshine or water, or any of the other loving, life-giving nutrients I needed. I was still looking outside of myself to get them—unconditional love, approval, acceptance of myself just as I am—instead of supplying them to myself first. I hadn’t yet learned that I was worthy of receiving by giving everything to myself first, because only then would I see it reflected in my outside world.
So how do you plant a tree of self-love and grow it into a healthy, happy, lush tree?
Here are the five major life lessons that tree taught me:
1) You are not your struggle.
2) Focus on your inner light and recognize your Divinity. This is Self-Realization.
3) Never abandon yourself.
4) You are Love.
5) Believe in yourself and what you are capable of.
